Announcing a new series from the University of Illinois Press
Mainstream criminology continues to take for granted many of its core assumptions, undermining its capacity to promote meaningful change in society and in people’s lives. Contrastingly, critical criminology increasingly finds support within various academic circles, making it a viable outlet for teachers, students, researchers, policy analysts, and lay professionals who seek innovative, provocative, and useful approaches by which to reinterpret and re-examine enduring issues in crime, law, and justice. Given these realities, Critical Perspectives in Criminology will publish scholarly books and edited volumes that are critically conceived, theoretically animated, integratively focused, and policy oriented. Thus, published works in the Series will rely on the interpretive tools of various domains of critical criminological thought, such as feminist discourse, critical race theory, post-structuralism, restorative justice, critical hermeneutics, Marxism, postmodernism, etc. In this way, Series titles will effectively: (a) investigate concrete and pressing problems in crime, law, and justice; (b) assess the philosophical or theoretical foundations of the phenomenon under consideration and; (c) discover the evolving meaning(s) of criminology as an intellectual approach to the knowledge process and as a practical domain by which to improve the human social condition.
Critical Perspectives in Criminology seeks to reorient the field of criminology, mindful of its under-examined philosophical or theoretical roots by targeting controversial or pressing topics in the field. When critically and integratively investigated, this targeted analysis should yield scholarship more consistent with the tenets of humanism, justice, collective well-being, and institutional change in society. Through this series, we seek to disseminate intellectually stimulating and practically relevant monograph length criminology books and volumes, emphasizing critical research, theoretical grounding, synthetic analysis, and policy (re)formulation. We hope to identify and secure commitments from established authors and emerging talent in the field of criminology, including individuals whose disciplinary base is sociology, psychology, law, philosophy, history, psychiatry, political science, gender studies, and any of the other related social and behavioral sciences.
Books in the Series will be aimed at the scholarly community, including library acquisitions and single purchases by academic researchers, as well as classroom adoption in upper division undergraduate and lower division graduate courses. Volumes in the Series will NOT be intended for use as undergraduate textbooks. SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
