Forensic medicine has lofty goals finding and presenting medical facts, pursuit of justice, and defense of public safety. These goals shape the cornerstone of medicolegal death investigation, which is the correlation of autopsy findings with the circumstances of death. The primary goal of the course is to provide working knowledge regarding that place where law and medicine intersect, the forensic autopsy. Guidelines for the interpretation of autopsy findings and the circumstances surrounding unexplained or violent deaths will be explored. In addition, the role of related forensic disciplines in elucidating why and how people die will be presented. Nationally renowned authorities in the forensic sciences will provide concise, topical reviews in the many facets of death investigation. The material presented will be beneficial to pathologists, residents, fellows, criminal investigators, attorneys, and others with an interest in forensic medicine. The course objectives of the course:
• Describe all the elements that constitute a thorough postmortem examination;
• Interpret autopsy findings taking into account scene information and medical history;
• Identify the various forensic science disciplines that relate to death investigation.
