–Assistant Professor of Sociology at
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology announces a tenure-track opening for an
Assistant Professor of Sociology, beginning in the Fall of 2010. Areas of specialization are
open, but we particularly encourage applications from candidates with expertise in one of the
following areas: racial and ethnic relations; deviance and social control; or conflict and violence.
Candidates should have a record of scholarly accomplishment or the clear potential for
distinction with respect to research. Although all methodological orientations will be considered,
we encourage applications from candidates with strong backgrounds in quantitative research.
Candidates should also have substantial experience in, and a demonstrated commitment to,
diversity in the academic environment. Women and members of historically excluded groups are
especially encouraged to apply. Northeastern University is a large and growing private
institution located in the heart of Boston. The Department houses two dozen faculty members
and a well-established PhD program in sociology. Members of the Department benefit from
multiple interdisciplinary linkages to programs in African American Studies, the Institute for

Race and Justice, the Women’s Studies Program, the Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional

Policy, the College of Criminal Justice, and the Brudnick Center for the Study of Violence,
among many others. The PhD in Sociology must be in hand at the time of appointment.
